You may see small holed nets laying
claim to the ‘Anti-Vice’ name in tack
and feed shops.
But
the only genuine one will have the Furlong's name
on it. When the ‘Anti-Vice’ net was
developed in the 1950’s, we had no idea
that we'd joined the hallowed ranks of Hoover
and Biro in creating the generic name for our
product.
Many hay nets have holes from which horses can
pull large mouthfuls of hay. These are only partially
masticated and swallowed in considerable chunks,
which can reduce the amount of goodness that could
be extracted and noticeably increasing the difficulties
of trapped wind. The ‘Anti-Vice’ net
is designed to make feeding a slower process,
returning the horse to its "natural"
feeding habit. In tests, we quickly noticed a
marked reduction in digestive troubles, an improvement
in nutrition and, surprisingly, a reduction in
hay consumption without loss of weight. And no
more tying the top rope to the net helps.
The idea behind ‘Anti-Vice’ came
from considering the way that horses feed in the
wild. As we know, horses weren't created to eat
only grass; their neck and mouth are designed
to eat vegetation in small quantities at shoulder
height, watch them eating a nice hawthorn hedge.
They naturally take small mouthfuls of foliage,
and this is thoroughly chewed before swallowing.
Furlong's ‘Anti-Vice’ is the only
hay net that comes with a six-month guarantee.
They may cost more than imitations, but we know
many customers who are still using the same Anti-Vice
after more than eight years' service. Compare
that to other nets, and then consider the benefits
of giving your horse the best.
What surprised us more was the improvement in
behaviour of the horses fed using ‘Anti-Vice’.
This may well be because the extra effort required
in obtaining food keeps the horse occupied - quite
simply, it doesn't get bored. Each fill of hay
lasts longer, and your horse is happier and healthier.
And in the long term will save you money.
